History

Fort Purbrook was built in the 1870’s at the same time as the other forts on the hill, but It has more modern defence elements as it was one of the last to be completed. Like all the forts, it has many mysteries, local legends, and myths.

The fort Purbrook was used mainly by the military right up to the 60’s and was used during both world wars, where it saw action from them both . The home guards used it as a training site. It was also to store military equipment and a vehicle depo. It was used for many things over the years , as a pre-Europe bound soldiers station, and it was also a RAF/Navy raid training facility.

In the mid 60’s it was left to the local council where the fort became neglected, and it also got heavily vandalised as it was just sat empty. Councillor Peter Ashley took the fort on in the early 80’s so that young children could go and enjoy outdoor sporting activities away from the city. With the help of the youth training scheme (YTS), the process of rebuilding the fort began. Once this had been completed, the doors were open to the first clubs, which were judo and archery. Over the next 36 years, the Peter Ashley centres took place . Now, they have an engagement of more than seventy thousand people throughout the year, viewing and using the fort. The fort was built to defend the community of Portsmouth, but now it serves the community. With so much history here, what will we find?
